Pyrrosia Piloselloides

Description

Pyrrosia Piloselloides, also called the rabbit’s foot fern, is a species of epiphytic fern that belongs to the Polypodiaceae family. This fern is native to Southeast Asia, namely the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia. It is commonly found growing on tree trunks, rocks, and other non-soil substrates in the forest.

Family Polypodiaceae
Genus Pyrrosia

Appearance

Pyrrosia Piloselloides has a rhizomatous growth habit, which means it grows horizontally along its substrate. The leaves are simple, oblong or elliptical in shape, and have a leathery texture. The leaf margins are wavy and slightly curled. The fronds can grow up to 30 cm in length and 5 cm in width, and the color is usually dark green. On the underside of the leaves, there are brown or black scales that resemble a rabbit’s foot, hence the common name.

Care Guide

Water: Pyrrosia Piloselloides prefers to be kept moist but not waterlogged. Water the fern when the top layer of soil is dry to the touch, but do not let it completely dry out. Avoid overhead watering as it can cause the scales to rot.
Fertilization: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix with good water retention properties.
Sunlight: Pyrrosia Piloselloides prefers dappled shade or filtered sunlight. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves.
Hardiness Zones: This fern is not frost tolerant and is best suited for USDA hardiness zones 10-11.

Common Pests & Diseases

Pyrrosia Piloselloides is generally pest and disease resistant, but it can be susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects. If detected, use an insecticidal soap to control the infestation. Root rot can occur if the soil is too wet or if there is inadequate drainage.

Habitat

Pyrrosia Piloselloides is commonly found growing in the understory of lowland and montane rainforests, particularly on non-soil substrates such as rocks and tree trunks. It can also be found growing on limestone cliffs and in humid areas near waterfalls or streams.
